Indian woman football referee for Olympics

Bentla D’Coth, the first Indian woman to become an international football referee, has been selected by the International Football Federation (Fifa) to officiate the women’s soccer matches at the Athens Olympics from August 11 to 28.

The 32-year-old Bentla, who is working in the State Agriculture department, has already officiated in a number of international tournaments like the Asian Games, the pre-Olympic qualifying tournament in Fiji, the South East Asian Games and the prestigious Asian Women’s Championship.

Bentla, the only woman referee from the Asian continent, is a native of Mulavukad in Kochi. Currently in China, officiating the Asian Women’s under-19 football tournament, Bentla has to report at Athens for the tournament on August 6, said a Kerala Football Association (KFA) press release in Kochi. The KFA also expressed their happiness at Bentla’s success in the press release.
